An enhanced bactericidal activity of macrophages due to any increase in the number of lysosomes and in the secretion of microbicidal products. It is induced, in association with specific delayed hypersensitivity, by various intracellular parasites, such as Listeria and Salmonella.

Augmentation des fonctions des macrophages sous l'action de médiateurs produits par les lymphocytes T sensibilisés en présence de l'antigène (comme le MAF, macrophage activation factor). Il faut distinguer cette activation «fonctionnelle» de l'augmentation du nombre et peut-être de l'activité des macrophages péritonéaux consécutive à une injection de substances irritantes comme le thioglycolate de sodium, parfois aussi désignée sous le terme d'activation.
