Addiction is a pervasive repetition of behavior that continues despite associated consequences. Individuals struggling with addiction experience uncontrollable urges or cravings to engage in problematic substance use or behaviors (e.g., gambling, stealing, spending, sex, etc.). La dépendance se caractérise par un besoin incontrôlable de poser un geste ou de consommer une substance. Lorsqu'une personne avec une dépendance satisfait ce besoin, elle perçoit une sensation de plaisir et de satisfaction. Lorsque ce besoin n'est pas satisfait, un sentiment de manque (sevrage) se crée chez la personne. Ce manque peut avoir des effets psychologiques et physiques qui sont négatifs pour la personne.
