Cette mesure est réalisée par comptage des éléments figurés éliminés pendant une période de 2 à 3 heures. Normalement le débit des hématies est inférieur à 5000 éléments/min. Le débit normal des leucocytes est inférieur à 5000 éléments/min. Lorsque ces deux valeurs sont supérieures à 10 000 éléments/min, ceci est considéré comme pathologique et généralement associé à une maladie rénale.
