L'alcoolisme gamma correspond à peu près à l'alcoolose de Fouquet. Cette forme implique «une dépendance psychologique ainsi que la perte de contrôle de la consommation d'alcool. Le sujet a perdu la liberté de boire modérément.» L'intéressé peut avoir des périodes de sobriété de quelques semaines à quelques mois. Au moment des rechutes, il perd sa capacité de contrôle et consomme jusqu'à l'ivresse. C'est le type d'alcoolisme le plus représenté en Amérique du nord.
