Polymorphisme. Plusieurs espèces minérales sont polymorphes si elles ont même formule chimique, mais des structures différentes; pour un élément on emploie le terme d'allotrope : par exemple, diamant et graphite sont deux formes allotropiques du carbone; aragonite et calcite sont deux espèces polymorphes du carbonate des calcium CaCo3. Les différents polymorphes d'une même substance sont formés sous différentes conditions de température, de pression, d'environnement chimique; donc la présence d'un polymorphe dans une roche renseigne sur les conditions de formation de cette roche.
