Depuis la deuxième guerre mondiale, plusieurs générations d'accéléromètres se sont succédées. Il s'agit des accéléromètres pendulaires libres capacitifs, des accéléromètres pendulaires à rappel électromagnétique à amortissement fluidique, des gyroscopes balourdés, des accéléromètres pendulaires secs à amortissement gazeux, des accéléromètres à cordes vibrantes, et enfin des accéléromètres à poutres vibrantes, souvent dénommés VBA pour Vibrating Beam Accelerometer.
