[Said of a] compound containing a large organic cation or anion which possesses a long unbranched hydrocarbon chain [so that the] existence of distinct polar (hydrophilic) and non polar (hydrophobic) regions in the molecule promotes the formation of micelles in dilute aqueous solution.

The hydrocarbon chains are hydrophobic (as infats). However, the changes on the phosphate and amino groups make that portion of the molecule hydrophilic. The result is an amphiphilic molecule.

[Se dit d'un] composé qui contient un cation ou un anion organique volumineux possédant une longue chaîne hydrocarbonée linéaire [et où on observe que] l'existence dans la molécule de régions polaires (hydrophiles) et non polaires (hydrophobes) distinctes favorise la formation de micelles en solutions aqueuses diluées.

Les molécules amphiphiles contenant à la fois des régions polaire et non-polaire doivent prendre des conformations pour satisfaire les deux régions. Ils peuvent former des couches monomoléculaires à la surface d'une solution aqueuse où la «tête» hydrophile est en contact avec l'eau alors que la queue hydrophobe orientée vers l'air n'est pas en contact avec des molécules d'eau mais en contact entre elles et avec des molécules (très peu ou pas polaires) de l'air. Lorsque la surface de la solution est complètement pleine de ces lipides, ceux-ci doivent trouver d'autres dispositions à l'intérieur de la solution aqueuse.

amphiphile (nom et adjectif) : Désigne une famille de substances dans lesquelles existent, à l'intérieur d'une même molécule, deux régions douées de solubilités très différentes et suffisamment éloignées entre elles pour se comporter de manière indépendante pour autant que le permettent les liens qui les réunissent. En général, les 2 régions sont formées respectivement par un groupement hydrophile et une ou plusieurs longues chaînes paraffiniques. Ex.: sels alcalins d'acides gras, détergents, etc.
