Le règne animal est divisé en embranchements : vertébrés, mollusques, arthropodes, etc. Chaque embranchement comprend plusieurs classes. Chaque animal, toujours désigné par deux noms latins - le premier indique le genre et le second l'espèce - se trouve ainsi défini par une série d'appartenances à des groupes de plus en plus restreints.
