L'alquifoux est employé par certains potiers pour préparer les glaçures. Sous l'action d'une chaleur oxydante, le sulfure de plomb se décompose, le soufre brûle et le plomb est transformé en oxyde qui, mélangé avec de la silice, donne un enduit vitreux servant à vernir les poteries. Son usage est réglementé en raison de sa toxicité.
