Dowry murder is a brutal practice involving a woman being killed by her husband or in-laws because her family is unable to meet their demands for her dowry -- a payment made to a woman's in-laws upon her engagement or marriage as a gift to her new family. It is not uncommon for dowries to exceed a family's annual income.

Los asesinatos por dote son una práctica brutal que involucra a mujeres asesinadas por sus esposos o por su familia política porque su familia es incapaz de pagar las demandas de su dote, que es un pago hecho a la familia política de la mujer por concepto de su compromiso matrimonial o matrimonio como un regalo para su familia nueva. No es poco común que una dote exceda el ingreso anual de una familia.
