Les boîtes de vitesses mécaniques comportent un arbre d'entrée et un arbre de sortie coaxiaux et un arbre intermédiaire décalé, entraîné en permanence par l'arbre d'entrée (par l'intermédiaire d'un couple d'engrenages).
