Much of the new understanding generated by advances in tissue engineering is leading to progress in the field of hybrid organs, artificial organs created by housing natural cells in devices that allow them to carry out their natural functions while protecting them from the body's rejection mechanisms.

Les premiers vaisseaux hybrides obtenus par ingénierie tissulaire furent décrits en 1986 par C.B. Weinberg et E. Bell. Des cellules musculaires lisses et des fibroblastes étaient cultivés dans des tubes formés par des treillis de Dacron visant à donner une stabilité mécanique au système. Le vaisseau était ensuite ensemencé par des cellules endothéliales.
