Phénomène mis en évidence par le physicien allemand Barkhausen, qui a montré que l'aimantation d'un corps ferromagnétique se fait de façon discontinue.

Si l'on soumet un matériau à un champ magnétique alternatif, on peut recueillir, en retour, un signal présentant le profil typique d'un signal de bruit. Ce phénomène est exploité dans le contrôle non destructif des matériaux ferromagnétiques. En effet, l'amplitude du «bruit Barkhausen» dépend du niveau des contraintes résiduelles dans le matériau et de sa dureté.
