Since its first flight on the Second International Microgravity Laboratory (IML-2) mission in July of 1994, the BDPU has been upgraded to accommodate a high-voltage power supply so that experiments on electrohydrodynamic processes can be performed. The facility can accommodate several types of test cells with each one dedicated to a specific experiment. Commands can be sent from the ground to inject bubbles into liquid-filled test cells and then to subject these cells to predetermined temperature differences. Mécaniques des fluides. Les expériences sont menées à l'aide d'un appareillage baptisé BDPU (Bubble, Drop and Particle Unit, soit «Unité Bulles, Gouttes et Particules») conçu et réalisé par l'ESA. Le processus étudié est le rôle de la tension engendrée à l'interface liquide/liquide, liquide/gaz. C'est cette tension qui donne par exemple à la bulle de savon sa forme sphérique caractéristique : plus la tension de surface de la bulle est forte et uniforme, plus la bulle est sphérique et stable. Cette tension à l'interface diminue quand la température augmente. Il s'ensuit que, dans un liquide, les bulles migrent vers la partie la plus chaude du liquide, ce phénomène porte le nom de migration thermocapillaire. Sur Terre, l'effet de cette tension interraciale est souvent masqué par la gravité. On a étudié entre autres comment les bulles et les gouttes réagissent dans un liquide soumis à des variations de température et de concentration, à la solidification ou l'évaporation. 2, record 1, French, - dispositif%20gouttes%2C%20bulles%20et%20particules
