The CCGS Sermilik is named after the Sermilik Glacier, located in Sirmilik National Park in Nunavut. Sermilik is an Inuit word meaning "place of glaciers." The CCGS Sermilik is the eighth Arctic and Offshore Patrol Ship constructed under the National Shipbuilding Strategy, with six already delivered to the Royal Canadian Navy, and two currently under construction for the Canadian Coast Guard.
