Procédé de reproduction, surtout utilisé en Chine, où il fut connu dès le début de notre ère, et qui s'applique à des motifs, caractères ou dessins, gravés en creux, généralement dans la pierre. La méthode la plus répandue consiste à étendre sur l'œuvre à reproduire une feuille de papier légèrement humectée d'une solution d'agar-agar pour augmenter sa plasticité, en la tamponnant de manière qu'elle pénètre légèrement dans les creux, en laissant le papier en place après évaporation. L'opération se fait aussi au moyen d'un tampon d'étoffe fine ou d'un maillet recouvert de cuir souple, si bien que les parties réservées en creux apparaissent en blanc sur fond noir. 2, record 1, French, - estampage
