Inflammation that is persistent over time, due to the continuation of an acute stimulus, repeated bouts of acute inflammation, or the continuation over time of a low-grade, subclinical focus. Le déroulement d'une inflammation est dépendant du type d'agent, du taux de gravité et de l'ampleur du dommage subi. On fait une distinction entre une inflammation aiguë et chronique. Une inflammation aiguë apparaît en quelques heures, au maximum dans les 2 jours. Dans la plupart des cas l'inflammation est assez intense mais de courte durée.
