Roche sédimentaire d'origine argileuse, à grain très fin et dépourvue de stratification apparente.

CONT

Les schistes argileux sont des roches cohérentes, finement cristallisées, dans lesquelles on peut rencontrer du quartz, de la séricite, de l'illite, de la chlorite, de la calcite, de la pyrite et de la magnétite. Leur coloration est variable : noire (matières organiques, graphite), verte (chlorite), rouge ou violette (oxydes de fer) ou bigarrée (divers sels de fer).

OBS

Les schistes peu cohérents sont dits marneux ou argileux, suivant qu'ils font ou non effervescence avec les acides.
