Roches argileuses.- La boue argileuse devient compacte vers 2 000 m et durcit vers 3 000 m (argilite ou mudstone). À partir de 2 000 m les smectites se transforment en illite. Vers 3 000 m la cristallinité des illites augmente et la kaolinite se transforme en chlorite. Les argilites deviennent fissiles vers 4 000 m et se transforment en schistes vers 5 000 m, sous l'influence de contraintes tectoniques.
