La lithosphère est l'enveloppe la plus externe de la Terre qui comprend la croûte et une partie du manteau sous-jacent. On distingue trois lithosphères, thermique, chimique et mécanique. La lithosphère thermique est caractérisée par une forte augmentation de la température avec la profondeur, contrairement au manteau sous-jacent qui est quasiment à une température uniforme. Elle correspond à la couche limite thermique supérieure du manteau en convection. [...] La lithosphère thermique est par définition la couche limite thermique supérieure du domaine convectif [...]

La région se trouvant entre le noyau et le manteau est appelée la «couche D» qui est uniquement conductrice de chaleur; une région conductrice séparée par deux zones convectives est appelée une couche-limite thermique. Dans de telles zones, se développent des hétérogénéités thermiques mais aussi des hétérogénéités dans la structure (la vitesse des ondes élastiques n'augmente pas autant que dans le reste du manteau inférieur).
