In small arms ammunition: 1. Method of identifying a particular gauge of shotshells by the colour of the tube. e.g. golden colour of 20 gauge shotshells to prevent their inadvertent and dangerous insertion in 12 gauge shotguns. 2. Method of identifying the type of military cartridges by the colour of the bullet tip: Ball (No marking); Tracer (Red); Armour-Piercing (Black); Armour-Piercing-Incendiary (Silver); Incendiary (Blue); Observing (Yellow). 3. Method of identifying the type of military cartridges by the colour of the annulus. This practice is now obsolete but is still sometimes encountered on foreign ammunition. 4. Method of identifying a particular type of cartridges by plating the case, e.g. copper plating on a proof cartridge.
