Dans la soirée du 14 octobre 1918, alors que le New York mène un groupe de cuirassés dans le Pentland Firth, il est secoué par une violente collision sous-marine sur le tribord, suivie peu après par une autre à la poupe qui casse deux pales sur l'une de ses hélices, contraignant le navire à limiter sa vitesse à 12 nœuds (22 km/h).
