One of the most widely-used maritime medium-range surface-to-air missiles is the Raytheon RIM-7 Sea Sparrow, derived from the AIM-7 Sparrow air-to-air weapon. The Sparrows have semi-active radar guidance, but the surface-launched RIM-7 has folded wings and its tail-fins are clipped to enable it to fit inside launch canisters.

Four types of box launcher are under consideration: (a) one designed by Australian industry, (b) a version mounted on the pedestal at present used with the Kongsberg Penguin anti-ship missile, (c) a variant which fits the ramp that supports Otomat box launchers and (d) a type that stores the missile horizontally for use with torpedoes that cannot be tilted for long periods.
