Glories are formed by backward scattering from cloud or mist droplets. They appear on mountains and hillsides when the sun breaks through mist and when there is an opportunity to look downwards towards the antisolar point. La gloire est un phénomène rare et il faut être en altitude, notamment en avion, pour apercevoir le phénomène. Il s'agit en fait d'une série d'anneaux colorés qui se forment autour de l'ombre de l'avion projetée sur les nuages environnants. La disposition des couleurs est toujours la même : rouge à l'extérieur, violet à l'intérieur. Le phénomène est dû à la diffraction et la réflexion de la lumière solaire sur les gouttes d'eau des nuages. En certaines circonstances, les gloires peuvent se former autour de l'ombre de l'observateur, elle-même projetée sur les brouillards ou les nuages à proximité. 3, record 1, French, - gloire
