Beginning in February or March, the cock establishes a territory or "crowing area", usually encompassing open field with some adjacent woods or bush for escape cover.

On définit le territoire comme «toute zone défendue». Il convient de se souvenir que le territoire varie en fonction des espèces. Chez certaines, celui-ci ne comprend que le nid et les quelques mètres carrés qui l'entourent. Chez d'autres espèces, il recouvre une zone beaucoup plus étendue dans laquelle les oiseaux s'accouplent et se nourrissent.
