Les expressions «cyberharcèlement» et «harcèlement en ligne» servent souvent à désigner trois genres d'activités : la communication directe par courriel ou par messagerie texte; le harcèlement sur Internet, c'est-à-dire lorsque le contrevenant affiche sur Internet des renseignements offensants ou menaçants au sujet de la victime; l'utilisation non autorisée, le contrôle ou le sabotage de l'ordinateur de la victime.
