Les fibres en coton ou synthétiques sont «peignées» par un processus de cardage, pour obtenir une mèche qui n'est autre qu'un toron continu de fibres lâches sans torsion. Cette mèche est ensuite étirée puis tordue pour produire un fil. La pièce prédominante d'une cardeuse est le cylindre de cardage équipé de milliers de pointes acérées qui peignent les fibres.
