A device for removing undesired magnetism, as from the playback head of a tape recorder or from a recorded reel of magnetic tape that is to be erased.

The demagnetizer ... should be run slowly across the gap and gradually removed with the current still on. This effectively removes any residual magnetism in the magnetic head.

Une tête magnétique est constituée par un bobinage enroulé sur un noyau en tôles magnétiques qui ne conservent pas d'aimantation rémanente. Néanmoins, au bout d'un grand nombre d'heures d'utilisation, il est possible que la tête devienne légèrement aimantée. Il faut dans ce cas la désaimanter à l'aide d'un appareil spécial appelé «démagnétiseur» ... Si l'on continue à passer des bandes magnétiques sur un magnétophone dont les têtes conservent une certaine aimantation, on constate un manque de fréquences aiguës, une augmentation du bruit de fond et surtout, l'on risque d'effacer partiellement l'enregistrement existant sur la bande.
