Natural or artificial obstacle used to protect land from the inundation of river or sea water.

Dikes, artificial embankments (technically neither dams nor levees) have been constructed to hold bodies of water, mostly on relatively flat land. A body of water so retained may be in nature of a reservoir, lake, pond, or flooding. Also dikes may be constructed on the shores or borders of a lake ... to prevent inflow into a lake of undesirable water.

The rubber dam ... is used to isolate a designated tooth or teeth in the mouth before certain operative, endodontic and preventive dentistry procedures are performed. The rubber dam provides a clean, dry field of operation and improves the dentist's view of the operating site. It also keeps fluids, tissues, and the tongue away from the operating site and prevents the patient from accidentally swallowing or aspirating debris.
