Among the Common Law Provinces of Canada, Ontario, British Columbia, Nova Scotia and Newfoundland have prohibited tissue donation by minors, and in doing so, have followed the uniform legislation recommended for adoption in all Common Law provinces of this country.

Le don de tissus humains se distingue du don d'organes de plusieurs façons. Une distinction importante tient au fait que les tissus, comme par exemple les os, les valves cardiaques ou la peau, sont des structures beaucoup moins complexes que les organes tels que le cœur ou les reins.

Bien qu'il permette, tout comme le don d'organes, de sauver des vies, dans la majorité des cas, le don de tissus vise surtout à en préserver ou en améliorer la qualité.

Se entiende por donación de órganos o tejidos, la cesión hecha por la persona en forma voluntaria, expresa y escrita. [...] La donación de órganos o tejidos implica la extracción de los mismos y de las partes que con ellos se relacionen, así como los tejidos que sean necesarios, a efecto de que el trasplante tenga éxito.

Para quienes fallezcan por fuera de las unidades de terapia intensiva, la donación posible se reduce a la de tejidos (córneas, huesos, articulaciones y piel).
