Pour cueillir les données relatives aux composantes biotiques et abiotiques du milieu forestier, le Québec effectue notamment des inventaires écologiques, aux fins desquels il distingue quatre niveaux de perception : la région écologique, le district écologique, le type écologique et le type forestier. [...] Le type écologique correspond à une portion du district écologique où les caractéristiques pédologiques sont relativement uniformes et où la végétation évolue de façon particulière. On présente le type écologique sur des cartes à l'échelle 1/20000, sur lesquelles on décrit la nature et l'épaisseur du dépôt, le drainage et la pente. La végétation y est désignée par le nom du groupement écologique stable caractéristique du site (végétation potentielle).
