[The capacity to] reduce, increase or maintain an emotional response (for example, fear, anger or pleasure) on the basis of the actions of the self or others.

CONT

During the first years of life, emotional regulation develops progressively and induces significant effects on child's behaviour. From the age of 3 years, the child starts to modify the intensity of her or his emotional expression depending on the situation, in conformity with social rules.
