Deterioration during burial. In certain burial conditions, there may be exceptional preservation of objects. Organic materials (e.g. wood, skin and leather, feathers, bone, ivory, textile, horn, antler, baleen) are best preserved in very wet, very dry, frozen or low-oxygen burial environments. In these conditions, the materials are protected from biological activity (e.g. bacteria, mould, insects, animals).

Site capping or burial involves judiciously covering an archaeological site or elements of an archaeological site with fill, asphalt, peat, concrete, etc. for conservation purposes.

A number of disposal methods for nuclear fuel wastes have been suggested internationally, including ejection of the waste into outer space; transmutation of the radioactive elements; emplacement in a polar ice cap; and burial within various geological formations, both on the continents and beneath the sea floor.

Of the various disposal concepts which have been suggested for LLW, only three were compatible with the geological characteristics of the CRNL property: burial in excavated sand trenches with minor engineered features to inhibit nuclide migration, containment in an engineered below-ground vault; and emplacement in a shallow mined cavity rock.
