The competitive offshoot of sport climbing in which competitors, competing in UIAA events for prize money and with the backing of sponsors, attempt to scale a cliff face or an artificial climbing wall in the fastest possible time or, alternately, attempt to see who among them can climb the highest in the alloted amount of time. 1, record 1, English, - competition%20climbing
Record number: 1, Textual support number: 1 OBS
The degree of difficulty in competition climbing is based on the Taquitz decimal system. The difficulty indicators range from 5.0 for the easiest climb to 5.14 for the most difficult. From 5.10 to 5.14, the difficulty indicators are further divided into A,B,C, and D (e.g. 5.10A, 5.10B etc.) with the most difficult climb in the world currently rating a 5.14C/D. 1, record 1, English, - competition%20climbing
Record number: 1, Textual support number: 2 OBS
The term "competition climbing" serves to denote the competitive side of sport climbing. It is therefore a narrower concept of "sport climbing" and should be used accordingly even though the former term is still used erroneously even by professional climbers and amateur enthusiasts alike. It would appear that the term "competition climbing" has not yet taken root in the mind of rock climbers. 1, record 1, English, - competition%20climbing

An offshoot of mountaineering in which participants, whose safety is assured by a toprope, attempt to scale cliff faces or artificial climbing walls presenting various degrees of difficulty. 1, record 2, English, - sport%20climbing
Record number: 2, Textual support number: 1 OBS
First developed in France's Verdun Gorge in the mid 1970's sport climbing involves climbing a route that has been previously groomed, inspected and prepared (removal of moss, ferns and other debris from holes and cracks). The preparation involves rapelling down the cliff face and installing bolts or pitons in such a way that they will remain permanently, forever scarring the rock face. Given the minimal risk involved, the gymnastics of sport climbing takes precedence over the danger. Increasingly, the sport is performed on artificial climbing walls with removable bolts and pitons that, when arranged in a certain manner, allow for the instant creation of new, more difficult routes. The existence at these walls also lessen environmental damage to natural rock faces. 1, record 2, English, - sport%20climbing
Record number: 2, Textual support number: 2 OBS
Cannot be used interchangeably with the term 'competitive climbing' which serves to denote a relatively new concept: the competitive side of sport climbing. 1, record 2, English, - sport%20climbing

1, record 2, French, - escalade%20sportive
