The Tar Ponds (consisting of the North Tar Pond and the South Tar Pond) is the common name for Muggah Creek, a tidal estuary that received industrial discharges from upstream industrial activities, including the Coke Ovens. Les étangs de goudron (soit l'étang de goudron du Nord et l'étang de goudron du Sud) sont le nom courant du ruisseau Muggah, un estuaire qui a reçu des évacuations industrielles des activités industrielles en amont, y compris les fours à coke. Le goudron est un dérivé houillé de couleur noire. Sous-produit de la distillation de la houille lors de la fabrication du coke, il est très visqueux, voire solide (brai de goudron). Dans le langage courant, on le confond souvent avec le bitume d'origine pétrolière.
