Substance produite par les macrophages et les monocytes, lorsque ceux-ci sont stimulés, soit par les divers agents doués d'un pouvoir d'activation directe des macrophages, soit même par les lymphokines capables de modifier profondément les macrophages. Le facteur d'activation lymphocytaire agit sur les lymphocytes T en stimulant leur prolifération. Il n'y a pas d'action directe sur les lymphocytes B, mais ceux-ci peuvent voir leur fabrication d'anticorps indirectement accrue sous l'effet des lymphocytes T stimulés.
