Aridez ... El grado al cual un clima le falta la humedad efectiva y promotora de vida; lo opuesto a humedad en el sentido climático del término. El concepto global de aridez vs. humedad es lo que viene a ser llamado de efectividad de la precipitación. Dos teorías básicas han sido desarrolladas. La primera, usada por W. Köppen y modificada [por] Bailey, no define abiertamente la aridez, sino que asigna valores definidos de la precipitación anual (tomado con respecto a su distribución) y a la temperatura para separar un clima seco, de otros tipos. La segunda idea describe una medida de aridez o precipitación efectiva y usa estos valores como un parámetro primario de clasificación. De este tipo son el índice de efectividad de la precipitación de C.W. Thornthwaite (1931) y su índice de humedad (1948), el índice de aridez de E. De Martonne y el coeficiente de aridez de W.
