L'utilisation répétée du GTP au cours d'un si grand nombre d'étapes du processus de traduction (initiation, élongation et terminaison) doit recevoir une explication simple. Il n'existe aucune indication que le GTP puisse être utilisé dans la formation de liaisons covalentes; il ne fonctionne donc pas comme donneur d'énergie, semblable à l'ATP. Mais il joue un rôle clé dans la liaison non-covalente de nombreux facteurs de traduction (IF2, EF-3, EF-G, RF) et des ribosomes.
