Le terme de "banques de données" regroupe en fait plusieurs produits, très différents, aussi bien par leur contenu que par leur mode de conception. Ce sont d'abord les banques numériques (ou factuelles), où sont stockées des données chiffrées (telle la banque française Thermodata, où sont réunies les caractéristiques physiques et chimiques de la matière, les propriétés mécaniques des matériaux...). Ce sont aussi les banques de données bibliographiques (parfois appelées bases de données), qui fournissent des sources d'information - des références bibliographiques - sans en donner le contenu sinon par des mots-clés et parfois par un résumé.
