Les fasciculines sont des toxines inhibitrices de l'acétylcholinestérase (AChE), enzyme qui hydrolyse l'ACh [acétylcholine] présente en excès dans la fente synaptique. Son inhibition conduit à une augmentation de la concentration d'ACh et par conséquent à une «surstimulation» des récepteurs nicotiniques post-synaptiques, aboutissant à une fibrillation musculaire et finalement à une paralysie.
