Mousse à sporogones latéraux, commune dans nos régions. (Les hypnums sont des mousses d'assez grande taille [atteignant 20 cm], à tige grêle, formant des gazons lâches. Ce genre est maintenant démembré; c'est ainsi que l'espèce la plus commune en France, Hypnum triquetrum, est maintenant nommée Rhytidiadelphus triquetrus.)
