Combustion à chargement par le haut (overfeed) : Sur la grille, le charbon est chargé par le haut (overfeed) tandis que l'air comburant arrive par le bas. On a [...] de bas en haut : l'arrivée d'air, la grille, le charbon incandescent, le charbon non enflammé mais assez chaud pour distiller ses vapeurs volatiles, le charbon froid. Les matières volatiles ne sont pas brûlées mais entraînées avec les fumées, d'où mauvais rendement et risques d'explosions. Une chaudière à combustion «overfeed» ne doit brûler que des charbons contenant peu de matières volatiles : anthracite ou coke. En anglais, on parle surtout du dispositif d'alimentation en combustible du foyer (stoker); en français, on parle plutôt de l'endroit où a lieu la combustion (foyer) et où est logé l'organe de combustion qui est la grille. Il est à noter que selon le Grand dictionnaire encyclopédique Larousse (LAROG), le foyer «est à la fois un lieu et un ensemble d'appareils ou d'organes [...]».
