A cadence of three heart sounds which may be due either to a third sound (protodiastolic gallop) or to a fourth sound (presystolic gallop), or to a combination of them (summation gallop), in addition to the two normal sounds (first and second). It is a feature of cardiac failure, but may also be heard in healthy young people.
