Le projet dénommé SIGMA (Système d'Imagerie Gamma à Masque Aléatoire) débuta dès 1983 sous la maîtrise d'œuvre du CNES [Centre national d'études spatiales], qui confia au CEA [Commissariat à l’énergie atomique et aux énergies alternatives] la réalisation de l'élément clef du télescope : la caméra à rayons gamma. [...] La finesse sans précédent de la caméra [braquée vers le centre de notre Galaxie] [...] n'y confirma pas la présence d'un trou noir géant, mais découvrit une source gamma brillante décalée d'un degré par rapport au centre galactique. [...] Cette source est un système binaire constitué d'une étoile et d'un objet compact, probablement un trou noir.
