Un gazomètre à cuve d'eau ou hydraulique ou télescopique est constitué par une cloche dont le guidage peut être radial, tangentiel ou hélicoïdal, et qui plonge dans une cuve remplie d'eau. La capacité de tels gazomètres peut aller jusqu'à 300 000 m³.

Ces énormes cuves ont été remplacées par des stockages fermés sous une pression beaucoup plus forte.
