Les méthodes de marquage et de recapture génétique et physique se ressemblent sur le plan de la technique utilisée : pour la première comme pour la seconde, on poursuit l'ours blanc en hélicoptère et on procède à un seul marquage. Toutefois, avec la méthode génétique, contrairement à la méthode physique, on n'immobilise pas l'animal au moyen de produits chimiques et on ne le manipule pas. À la place, on extrait l'ADN d'un petit échantillon de peau et de poils prélevé à l'aide d'une flèche à biopsie que l'on tire depuis l'hélicoptère. Les tissus contiennent un code ADN propre à chaque individu : la marque. On peut également déterminer le sexe de l'animal en effectuant une analyse génétique.
