In March 1821, the North West Company and Hudson's Bay Company amalgamated and on December 5 of the year, under an Act of Parliament (dated July 2, 1821), the new company, which retained the name Hudson's Bay Company, was granted exclusive trade with the Aboriginals in British North America by the Colonial Office. En mars 1821, la Compagnie du Nord-Ouest et la Compagnie de la Baie d'Hudson ont fusionné; le 5 décembre de la même année, aux termes d'une loi du Parlement (datée du 2 juillet 1821), la nouvelle compagnie, qui conserva le nom de Compagnie de la Baie d'Hudson, a obtenu du Bureau des colonies le droit exclusif de commercer avec les autochtones de l'Amérique du Nord britannique.
