La novaculite est une roche siliceuse cryptocristalline très dense, à texture homogène et de couleur claire. Elle ressemble au chert, mais s'en distingue par la prédominance du quartz sur la calcédoine. La novaculite est associée dans cette partie des États-Unis à du chert et à des schistes.
