Dans un sol hydromorphe, une saturation temporaire ou permanente des pores par l'eau provoque un déficit prolongé en oxygène. Les traces d'hydromorphie (taches, rouilles, teintes bleuâtres-verdâtres des gleys, abondance et aspect de la matière organique, ...) peuvent être absentes ou masquées, alors même que le sol est engorgé dans les horizons calcaires ou déferrifiés, dans les sols à nappe circulante oxydante. Les traces d'hydromorphie observées peuvent résulter de phases d'engorgement anciennes, qui ont cessé aujourd'hui («hydromorphie fossile»).
