any of a subgroup of enzymes of the oxidoreductase class, which catalyze the coupled oxidation of two hydrogen donors with incorporation of oxygen from O2 into one of the donors. Hydroxylases of clinical importance are those that act on steroids to synthesize cortisol and corticosterone, and those that act on the aromatic rings in phenylalanine, tyrosine, and tryptophan metabolism.
